CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

The hangover from a two thousand dollar bottle of wine was just as bad as a three dollar variety.

The dinner slash meeting had dragged on until almost midnight but was surprisingly pleasant. They discussed Maurah, the various employees Carolina had interviewed, and more trivial matters. Mercifully, their personal lives didn’t come up again.

By the time they parted ways, the bottle was empty, and Carolina had a good buzz. She was paying for it now.

A few minutes after seven a.m., Nik had texted her. His secretary had scheduled a meeting between Carolina and Fiona at nine in his office. When Carolina arrived at eight fifty, she had the place to herself. She was still alone at nine twenty-five.

Thirty-five minutes of waiting for this bitch.

As she stared out the window, taking in the mountains and trying to ignore the thudding in her head, she heard the private elevator ding. A woman’s nasally voice grew closer and louder. She didn’t sound happy.

“It was supposed to be here yesterday,” the still unseen Fiona said. “I demand expedited shipping and a refund for my trouble.”

Finally, she stomped into the office, her heels clicking against the tile like an angry tap dancer. She made eye contact with Carolina but did not acknowledge her with a wave, smile, or even a look of disdain.

Carolina had initially thought Nik pretentious, but his ex took that to a whole other level.

Fiona sat down on the couch, and Carolina rose from the desk, walking toward her.

“I don’t care that it is an inconvenience for you,” Fiona said into the phone. “It’s not my problem to fix, it is yours. So do your job and don’t make me have to call again. Do you understand?”

Fiona ended the call but shifted immediately to sending a text. She glanced over at Carolina, now standing in front of the couch, and actually acknowledged her this time. But not to apologize or even share a polite smile.

Instead, Fiona sneered, like she had just stepped on a piece of particularly foul dog shit while wearing her favorite Louboutins. Her gaze drifted to the windows - she apparently found the view more appealing than the woman sharing the room. “What is it you want from me?”

Carolina considered circling around her and planting herself in Fiona’s eyeline so that she’d be forced to see her, but doing that might make an unpleasant interaction even worse.

“Nik has hired me to locate Maurah.”

Fiona waved her hand dismissively. “Of course. I know this already. It’s why I’m here. What I’m uncertain of is how you expect me to be of assistance.”

Carolina chose her words carefully. She didn’t want any bullshitting, so she made sure to expose the truth that she already knew. “When was the last time you were in contact with your adopted
